Starting a new health habit? Tell yourself these 5 things

“I don’t need more discipline. I need more time.”

It takes about 7-8 weeks to “learn a new taste. Sources like the National Kidney Foundation recommend giving yourself about 2 weeks to gradually adjust to a low sodium diet, for instance. But this can also apply to lowering one’s sugar intake.

“Journeys are more fun with friends.”

Bring an accountability partner with you. In one study conducted by Kaiser Permanente, people who journaled what they ate were twice as likely to lose weight as those who did not keep logs.

“I will fall off of the horse and I will get back on it again.”

Starting a new health habit like drinking more water won’t be an effort free of roadblocks. There will be days when you meet your goal. There will be days when you do not reach it. Keep going. Keep trying.

“I’m outsourcing what I can while I learn something new.”

You know your schedule, weaknesses, time management and routines better than anyone else. If you are dedicating more time and effort towards improving your health, think about what can be removed from your plate. This preparation helps to alleviate any additional stress during your acclimation period.

“I will eagerly celebrate my success!”

Plan to celebrate when you reach your short term goals and long term goals. What would your future self like to do when you’ve conquered your goal? Use this as motivation during the hard times.
